The Jammu Railway Division is poised to make history as India’s first high- altitude road division, with important of its tracks running through the Himalayan ranges. The  topmost point in the division will be Qazigund station,  deposited at an elevation of  1,722 measures(  5,650 bases). The division spans over 742.1 kilometers, making it the largest road division in the mountainous northern region.

To be inaugurated nearly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 6, the Jammu Railway Division marks a significant reorganization under Northern Railway. Its headquarters will be established in Jammu, and it will take over corridor of the Firozpur division, including  pivotal routes like Pathankot to Baramulla( 423 kilometers), Bhogpur( 87.21 kilometers), Batala( 68.17 kilometers), and Jogindernagar( 163.72 kilometers).

Officials disclosed that this reorganization  demanded an investment of ₹ 350 crore, but the  lately formed division is anticipated to induce periodic earnings of ₹  10,000 crore from freight and passenger transport. The strategically critical Bilaspur- Manali- Leh road line will also eventually come under this division.

On the day of the induction, final safety examinations will be conducted for the 17- kilometer rail link between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Reasi. Once approved by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, the link will complete the rail connection between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India, opening up new openings for passenger services and goods movement.

The road network in Jammu and Kashmir has a long and evolving history. A direct rail line formerly connected Jammu and Sialkot in 1890, but this desisted after Partition in 1947. Post-1965, the Pathankot- Jammu rail service began in 1972, while the Jammu- Udhampur design was completed in 2005. Rail service to Katra, the base for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrims, started in 2014.

Recent  milestones include the opening of the 48- kilometer Banihal- Sangaldan section in 2023 and the near- completion of the Reasi- Katra line. Looking ahead, plans are underway to connect Katra, Srinagar, and Baramulla via rail, further strengthening indigenous connectivity and fostering profitable development.

With its completion, the Jammu Railway Division is anticipated to play a vital part in enhancing transport structure in the northern countries and boosting overall development in the region.
